‘Your first B&H Frontrunners run’

At Brighton & Hove Frontrunners, we want to do everything we can to make your first run with us a great experience! You can run with us, for free, up to three times before becoming a member – so you can be sure that joining the club is right for you.

If you’re thinking of coming along to Brighton & Hove Frontrunners for the first time, read this page to find out how we support new members on their first run.

Before coming to your first run, please complete the form below [so we can make sure we welcome you and you’re fully supported.

All are welcome

All runners have to start somewhere, so why not start with us? Even our long-distance or faster runners started running somewhere. Though distance and speed are fun, we are also a club where it is not about how fast or how far you go but about showing up and taking part, one step at a time.

Brighton & Hove Front Runners is open to all runners and you always run at your own pace. To get the most out of our club, we recommend that you are able to run 5km, at any pace, without a break.

However, if you’re not yet able to run 5km, we regularly run Couch to 5k programmes to get you there. For more information on our Couch to 5k programmes, see here.  If your not comfortable learning in groups, we suggest following the NHS Couch to 5k programme which has been widely recommended by fitness professionals and beginners alike.

Weekly runs

Every Wednesday evening, at 7 pm, we normally offer three run options. We all start together at our meeting point on the promenade shelter by the King Alfred Leisure Centre (what3words location: ///transmitted.wasp.strain). You can run an ‘Out and Back’ or consider interval training, the style of which changes weekly. You can decide on the day which style of run you’d prefer.

  • With the Out and Back Run, we’ll do a warm-up with the run leader then the group will run out on an agreed course and back to the start. This is done at your own pace and you may walk part of this, if needed. There are normally two options available: a 40-minute run (20 minutes out, 20 minutes back) and a 30-minute run (15 minutes out, 15 minutes back). These are great options if it’s your first run with us.
  • With the interval training, we’ll do a warm-up led by the run leader and then start the interval sessions which involve periods of high-intensity running alternated with low-intensity running, walking, or rest.

What to expect

At the start of each session, everyone introduces their names and, if they feel comfortable sharing, their pronouns. Don’t worry: you won’t need to remember everyone’s name and you will soon learn how to run and chat! We recommend coming to at least three Wednesday sessions, so you get a chance to meet different people and get an idea of who you can run with at a similar pace.

As a beginner, coming on the first Wednesday of the month is also a great way to meet people, as this session is usually followed by a club social from 8 pm.

We also have use of the King Alfred Leisure Center changing room and lockers. You will need a £1 coin for the locks and we can explain more on your first run.

Parkruns

As well as our Wednesday run, you can often see Frontrunners usually in our purple kit across various parkruns around Brighton, Hove and Sussex. Sometimes, even further afield! If you do spot some of us in our purple vests, don’t hesitate to come and say hello!

Once a month, as many of us as possible meet up at a local parkrun, where we’d love you to join us. At all parkruns, you can run, jog or walk the 5k distance and we will help cheer and motivate you as you go. Please contact us to find out which ones we will be at, or see our parkrun page. Our ‘takeovers’ will be listed on the page or you can message us for confirmation.
